🐒 Brownsville Keepers Saved Two Baby Monkeys Taken From Traffickers |
Romina and Eve, two young Mexican spider monkeys, were taken from the wild and confiscated from wildlife traffickers at the border. Their first stop was Brownsville's Gladys Porter Zoo, where keepers did what Utah's Hogle Zoo calls "the initial round-the-clock work required to save these infants," treating their trauma and medical needs and raising them by hand. Now about 2 and 1 years old, they live at Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, where Eve still holds onto Romina's back for comfort, the way she would with her mother.
Spider monkeys have one baby at a time, and poachers often kill the mother to take it, Hogle Zoo says, so every baby taken hurts an endangered population.
The team that gave Romina and Eve their second chance works on Ringgold Street in Brownsville. Pick a Saturday in November, take the kids to Gladys Porter Zoo and tell them this story while you walk. The zoo is open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adults pay $17 to $21 and kids 2 to 13 pay $11 to $15, depending on the day. Kids under 2 get in free.

🐕 Save Him: Balaguer |
Balaguer sits at the top of Palm Valley Animal Society's longest-stay list. He's a 5-year-old Plott hound and Beauceron mix, and the shelter describes him as low-to-medium energy and respectful, a dog who loves to explore. He's staying with a foster family now, and the shelter waives the adoption fee for long-stay dogs. Adoption includes vaccines and a microchip.
Picture him on a Saturday walk through your neighborhood, steady at your side and ready to explore. That walk starts with one email. Write to adopt@pvastx.org today, put "Balaguer" in the subject line, and ask when you can meet him.
If now isn't your time for a dog, forward this email to one neighbor who's been wanting one. That's how he gets found, and they can sign up here for free.

P.S. The museum is free only until noon Saturday, so go early. See the museum's hours |
