Frank "The Tank" Medina, a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman for the UTRGV Vaqueros and a proud alumnus of San Benito High School, has recently been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Medina, who earned his spot on the team through sheer determination, shared the news on his social media platforms, expressing his commitment to overcoming this challenge.
"I wanted to share once I got the full results. I got diagnosed with Acute All Leukemia (a form of blood cancer)," Medina wrote. "It's scary and was definitely not part of the plan but it's God's plan and I'll follow his guidance. I'm currently in a San Antonio hospital where doctors and nurses know and care a lot. I'll be back stronger and better than before and best believe this isn't the end of my football journey, it's just a little adversity to overcome. I've worked too hard to let cancer win. I'll be thankful and appreciative of any prayers for my family and me or words of encouragement!"
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 318 pounds, Medina started in UTRGV's first four games of their inaugural season and made appearances in several others.
During his time at San Benito High School, Medina served as a team captain in his senior year, earning the title of District 32-6A's Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year and receiving All-Area honors for his leadership on the Greyhounds' offensive line.
In support of Medina's battle against leukemia, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to assist with expenses such as lodging, food, travel, and other financial burdens during this challenging time.
Medina's journey from a walk-on tryout to a scholarship athlete at UTRGV has been an inspiration to many. His resilience and positive outlook continue to rally support from the community as he faces this new challenge. |
